President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived in Washington on an official visit to the US at an invitation by US President Donald Trump.
President Sisi's visit to Washington will be the first of its kind for an Egyptian president since 2010, as the presidential visits during that period were limited to the annual visit to New York City to participate in meetings of the UN General Assembly.
During this period, only a meeting between President Sisi and former US president Barack Obama took place on the sidelines of Sisi's participation in the UN General Assembly meeting in New York after his inauguration in 2014, upon a request from Obama.
The visit comes as part of the two countries' keenness on promoting strategic relations.
Sisi and Trump will discuss ways of promoting relations in the coming phase along with enhancing coordination with the new US administration to restore momentum to Egyptian-US ties.
The visit, the first since Trump took office, will include discussions on regional and international issues.
President Sisi will meet with senior US officials and members of Congress. He will also meet with leaders of the US Chamber of Commerce and heads of major US companies to probe investment opportunities in Egypt.
He is planned also to convene with officials of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund to discuss ways of promoting cooperation between Egypt and the two international bodies in the various economic spheres.
