Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Thursday hailed strategic relations between Egypt and the US, pointing to current multiple mechanisms at the different levels between the two countries to explore new horizons of cooperation.

Shoukry's statements come in response to a question about the possibility of holding consultations between the two countries' foreign and defense ministers and the meeting of the US-Egypt Strategic Dialogue mechanism.

During a joint press conference with visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Shoukry said the strategic dialogue includes boosting cooperation in the political, economic, military and development fields.

He went on to say that the strategic dialogue and the Egyptian-American two-plus-two meetings provide a perfect opportunity to bolster bilateral coordination on strategic issues of common concern, which in turn could contribute to facing regional challenges and handling international problems.

Also, Shoukry termed Egypt-US relations as deep and diversified, saying such a mechanism could help strengthen bilateral ties.

For his part, the US secretary of state stressed the importance of convening such key meetings that cover several fields, notably energy, transport and civil aviation.

The US is determined to coordinate with Egypt with regard to cementing bilateral ties and addressing regional issues, Pompeo added. Asked about the human rights file in Egypt, Pompeo said that he probed with Egypt's top diplomat a number of topics of common concern, including human rights.

As for the US withdrawal from Syria and coordination with Turkey, Pompeo said the US is currently holding in-depth talks with Ankara to reach a consensus in this regard.

Concerning the contradiction in President Trump's remarks about the US withdrawal from Syria, the US secretary of state said there is no change in the US president's decision to pull the 2,000-strong US forces out of Syria, asserting that Washington will continue its war against Daesh in different ways.

Regarding the fight against terrorism, Shoukry highlighted the key partnership with the US in fighting terrorism in Syria, Iraq, West Africa and Libya.

Shoukry pointed out to the great threat posed by terrorist organizations that adopt extremist ideologies and resort to violence, saying that Egypt and the US are resolved on uprooting those terrorist groups.
