Closed session of AU Summit adopts fresh legal mechanisms


A closed session of the last day meetings of the African Union Summit, held in Addis Ababa, under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, on Monday 11/2/2019 discussed reports submitted by the African Heads of State and Government to inform the AU of the latest developments in issues of interest to the African Continent.

The reports covered climate change, UN Security Council reform, sustainable development through Africa's 2063 agenda, continental political integration, combating corruption, addressing illegal immigration, developing all aspects of the health sector and combating terrorism and violent extremism.

Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said the session adopted number of legal instruments and mechanisms of the African Union.

He added that the 32nd African Summit adopted the set-up agreement of the African Drug Medicines, the statute of the of the African Audiovisual and Cinema Commission, the statute of the African Union International Centre for Girls and Women Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) and the African Transitional Justice Policy, alongside amending the Charter of African Cultural Renaissance.

The closed session also adopted of a number of appointments in some AU committees and bodies, Rady said.

The summit tasked Sisi to lead efforts regarding the AU's post-conflict reconstruction and development file, he added.

It also adopted the Executive Council's decision to entrust the hosting of the African Space Agency to Egypt.
