The embassy mourned the victims of the terror attack. The embassy asserted that it is in constant contact with New Zealand's police and interior ministry to be posted on names and nationalities of the dead as well as to enhance security at gatherings of the Egyptian nationals.

Sky News channel said the death toll from the attack climbed to 40, while 20 others were wounded.

One of the attackers taken into custody was an Australian-born citizen, according to New Zealand police.

One shooting occurred at Al Noor mosque near Hagley Park in the city's center at about 1:45pm (local time) during Friday prayers.
