Thursday، 03 August 2017 - 02:31 PM
Egypt chaired in August 2017, for the second time, the UN Security Council (UNSC) Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC). Egypt has been chosen to head the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) as of January 2016.
UNSC counter-terrorism session chaired by Egypt
United Nations Security Council session on countering terrorism kicked off on Wednesday 2/8/2017 under the chairmanship of Egypt.
The session is presided by Egyptian Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Amr Aboulatta.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid revealed the Egyptian presidency of the Security Council sessions during current month.
Abu Zeid added that Egypt is chairing sessions of the Security Council for the second time during the period of its membership.
Egypt urges int'l community to deter financiers of terrorist groups
Aboulatta said that Egypt called on the international community and the UN to deter financiers of terrorist groups. Aboulatta offered an Egyptian initiative to deter people from supplying terrorist groups with weapons. The gathering unanimously approved the initiative.
"The armament of terrorist groups is a very serious crime that should be handled," Aboulatta said, adding that the initiative calls for boosting judicial cooperation among the world countries to prevent terrorists from getting weapons.
He also appealed to the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee to pay due regard to this important issue.
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi offered a comprehensive vision to counter terrorism in May after some countries supplied terrorist groups with weapons and funds to carry out terrorist attacks in Egypt, Abulatta noted.
He also called on the world countries to adhere to the UN resolutions, which call for facing terrorism by all means in line with the UN Charter and international law.
At the end of the address, Aboulatta said Egypt will always maintain its commitment to be at the forefront of the fight against terrorism while respecting international law and human rights.
