Egypt welcomed the unconditional ceasefire declared in Libya on Saturday evening 11/1/2020, voicing support of any measures that help prevent further bloodshed in the country.
In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry on Sunday 12/1/2020, Cairo underlined the need to revive the Berlin process and all UN initiatives seeking to facilitate political, economic and security reforms in Libya and bring about a holistic solution to the Libyan crisis.
The statement underscored the need to continue fighting extremist groups in Libya and take decisive actions against any side providing any form of support to these groups.
Egypt deemed the ceasefire as a preliminary step that must be followed by reconstituting Libya's presidential council in a duly manner, emphasizing the need for an equitable distribution of wealth in the North African country.
Moreover, the statement asserted the importance of respecting the role of Libya's parliament, as stipulated in the Skhirat accord, and the Libyan army's responsibility for maintaining security and stability in the country.
