Sisi highlights Egypt's efforts to maintain Libya's stability

Saturday، 06 June 2020 - 06:19 PM

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Saturday 06/06/2020 stressed Egypt's strenuous efforts to maintain Libya's security and stability.

Sisi met at the Ittehadiya Palace in Cairo with Commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar and Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh, presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said.

Egypt aims at reaching a political settlement in Libya, which is based on respecting the country's sovereignty, fair distribution of resources, and preventing any foreign interference in the Libyan affairs, Sisi stressed.

"Libya's security is part and parcel of the Egyptian national security," Sisi asserted, adding that both Haftar and Saleh have proved over the course of their meetings in Cairo - which took place during the previous days - their keenness on meeting the desire of the Libyan people.

During the meeting, Sisi was briefed on the latest developments in Libya and international efforts in this regard, Rady elaborated.

Sisi stressed that Egypt totally rejects any military escalation in Libya and refuses practices by some parties in Libya.

Haftar and Saleh welcomed Sisi's invitation for holding national talks in Cairo, and praised the vital role played by Egypt to bring about peace in Libya.

The meeting came up with an initiative to start a ceasefire in Libya starting 6 a.m. on Monday.

The initiative was based on the communiqué of the Berlin Summit that aimed at reaching an overall political solution to the Libyan crisis.

The initiative stated that the UN and the international community will force all foreign parties to get the foreign mercenaries out of Libya, dismantle militias and press them to hand over their weapons in order to let the Libyan forces protect the country.
