Wazir: 19 new passenger carriages arrive at Alexandria Harbor

Minister of Transport Kamel el Wazir said 19 passenger carriages arrived at Alexandria Harbour.
In a statement on Sunday 17/1/2021, the minister said the arrival of the new trains is part of a deal to manufacture and supply 1,300 new carriages in line with an agreement signed between Egypt's National Railways Authority (ENR) and Russian Transmash holding company. The deal is valued at 1.16 billion, which is the largest in the history of the Egyptian railway sector, he added.
El-Wazir said that as many as 227 carriages have been delivered so far, adding that other carriages will be delivered in batches in accordance to the timeline set under the deal.
According to the statement, the deal of the 1300 new railway carriages comprises 800 air-conditioned carriages of which 500 third-class cars will have dynamic ventilation, a new service offered to passengers for the first time in the Egyptian Railway system, 180 luxury second-class coaches, 90 luxury first-class ones and 30 air-conditioned cafeterias.
The deal shall contribute to raising the efficiency of daily operation and the regularity of the operating schedules, which coincides with the ventures of upgrading infrastructure, including signaling systems at crossings that are still using manual signaling rather than automation; renewal of railway bars and improvement of stations and workshops.
