Egyptian, Finnish FMs discuss updates on Ethiopian dam

Sunday، 14 February 2021 - 04:31 PM

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Sunday 14/2/2021 discussed over the phone with his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto the latest developments in the Horn of Africa, especially with regard to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Shoukry told Haavisto Egypt had high hopes for the success of the African Union's (AU) endeavors to solve the GERD crisis, but that negotiations involving Cairo, Khartoum and Addis Ababa did not yield tangible results, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez.
The top Egyptian diplomat said that Cairo looks forward to resuming the GERD negotiations under DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, who currently chairs the African Union for 2021.
Shoukry underlined the necessity of reaching a binding legal agreement before starting the second phase of the dam's filling, through launching a new round of serious negotiations that put into consideration the three parties' interests, the spokesman noted.
