PM suspends building permits in Historic Cairo

Saturday، 13 March 2021 - 10:03 PM

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli directed Saturday 13/03/2021 the bodies concerned to suspend the issuance of any construction or demolition licences in Historic Cairo.

The premier made the directives during an open dialogue meeting with a host of architects, archaeologists and planning experts at Wekalet El Ghouri, an architecturally stunning arts center in Central Cairo, to discuss the progress of an Urban Regeneration project for Historic Cairo (URHC).

He stressed that the project is not confined to renovating some archaeological buildings, rather it is envisioned as an integrated comprehensive development project that takes into account a set of constants, including the fact that a part of the area is recognized by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites.

Madbouli added that he was taken aback this morning after seeing that the area is in a state of deterioration due to disorganized spread of reinforced concrete buildings and commercial stores that have even changed their activities.

He further stressed that the State is determined to take immediate actions to iron out all the problems facing the project to ensure an adequate development of the region.
