The 43rd edition of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF)

The 43rd edition of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) opened on Friday evening at Egypt's Cairo Opera House with the participation of about 100 films from over 60 countries.
Running from Nov. 26 to Dec. 5 under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, the 43rd CIFF's opening ceremony was attended by Egyptian Minister of Culture Inas Abdel-Dayem.
CIFF abides by all precautionary measures taken in accordance with the guidelines of the Egyptian government and the World Health Organization, in order to ensure the safety of the participating filmmakers, the public and the festival team.
The opening ceremony was attended by a large group of artists, including FifiAbdo, SherifMounir, Nisreen Amin, Islam Ibrahim, Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, Nour(the Lebanese actress), Khaled Selim, RandaJabr(the famous media figure), Gouri Bakr, Ahmed El-Fishawy, Rasha Ben Moawiya, Amir Ramses, the great star Nadia El-Gendy,BossiShalaby(the famous media figure), Inshal Al-Tamimi (director of the El Gouna Film Festival), Dora, producer Magdy El-Hawary, Majed El-Masry, IlhamShaheen, Hana Shiha, Laila Alwy, Yousra, Nermin El-Feki, Mohamed Mamdouh, Engy El-Mokadam, Jamal Suleiman, SherineReda, the great star Lebleba.
The ceremony began with the appearance of the great artist Khaled El-Sawy, who welcomed the attendees participating in the session, saying: “Now, I am among the senior filmmakers.Just imagine with me if life was one color, or all birds were of one kind!Diversity is a blessing, and therefore the variety in cinema is a great blessing, the same as the character of the Egyptian society, which embraces all differences and cultures.”
This was followed by a speech by producer and scriptwriter Mohamed Hefzy, president of the festival, in which he confirmed that the support and encouragement he received over the years of his presidency of the festival was a great motivator for him to develop edition after another
He added that festivals, stars and writers are Egypt's soft forces, followed by screening a video clip, which reviewed photos of the most prominent stars who left our world during the last period, including Suhair Al-Babli, Ezzat Al-Alayli, Youssef Shaaban, Samir Ghanem, Dalal Abdel Aziz, and others.
Hefzy then invited the Minister of Culture, Dr.Enas Abdel Dayem, to open the 43rd edition. In her speech, the minister affirmed the state's permanent support for culture and the arts. She, also, expressed her pride in the position that the Cairo Festival has reached as the International Federation of Film Producers Associations in Paris has accredited it as a category “A” festival, making it the only one in the Arab and African region (FIAPF).
Furthermore, promos of the films participating in the international competition were reviewed, and the names of the jury were announced, as well as the name of the head of the jury, the Serbian director Emir Kutsorica, who took to the stage accompanied by a musical band, before giving a speech on this occasion.
This was followed by the performance by Hani Shenouda playing the song "Cinema Al-Hayat", sung by the artist Hind Abdel Halim.
Then the well-known artist, Mona Zaki took the stage to present the artist Karim Abdel Aziz, who received the Faten Hamama Award for Excellence, in appreciation of his career.
Karim Abdel Aziz expressed his gratitude thanking the festival as well as his father, the great director Mohamed Abdel Aziz, his mother and his wife. He, also, expressed his happiness with the award that bears the name of the Cairo Festival and Faten Hamama, and that the one who handed him the award is his lifetime friend Mona Zaki.
As for the Golden Pyramid Award for Lifetime Achievement, was won by the great artist Nelly. The award was presented by the great artist Samir Sabry, who brought back many memories that Nelly had collected over the course of their career.
The great artist Nelly expressed her great happiness for being honored at the Cairo International Film Festival, and said that the award brought happiness to her heart, adding, "I am extremely happy to be honored by the Cairo International Film Festival with the Golden Pyramid Appreciation Award."
For his part, Samir Sabry, who presented the award to Nelly, said: “I decided to attend today, despite my sick conditions, because I must be present during the honoring of Nelly, my life's friend, who chose to stay away, however she did not quit."
The opening ceremony witnessed the screening of the Spanish film “Official Competition”, for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa, a feature film directed by Mariano Cohen and Gaston Dobrat, starring Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martinez. The film tells the story of a billionaire businessman, who decides to make a film to leave his mark, in search of importance and social status.
The ceremony concluded with a song presented by Etisalat, which was sung by Hamid Al Shaeri.
