The Tourism and Antiquities Ministry announced that Egypt ranked first in Africa, fifth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and 51st globally in the 2021 Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) published by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021, titled "Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future", measures 117 economies on a range of tourism and travel related indicators and policies.

In a statement on Wednesday25/5/2022, the ministry said that Egypt jumped six places compared to 2019 edition of the TTDI.

Egypt has got the second greatest percentage improvement (+4.3%, 57th to 51st) in the entire index, the statement added.

Every two years, the WEF publishes in-depth analysis, as well as an index that gives countries a score and overall ranking and serves as a critical benchmarking tool for the T and T sector.

The index uses several pillars to evaluate rankings such as business environment, safety and security and health and hygiene.

The report discussed the impact of Covid-19 on the travel industry and how economies can build for a better future.
