The 100 Million Trees Initiative is receiving the attention of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi within the state’s efforts in the file of climate change, coinciding with the 27th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).

The Initiative aims at pinpointing 9900 sites  throughout the governorates with a total area of 6,600 feddans suitable as tree forests or gardens, in addition to providing agricultural seedlings with irrigation networks.

The initiative aims at doubling the per capita share of green spaces throughout the Republic, improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gases, achieving the maximum economic benefit from trees and improving the general health of citizens.

Objectives of the Initiative:

The Initiative aims at achieving six goals:

Scientific Objective: reduce the risks of global warming and climate change.
Economic Objective: combat food poverty.
Strategic Objective: preserve the water area.
General Objective: increase the green area, develop the environmental awareness, and provide pure oxygen.

National Objective:

Employ manpower in planting new trees and providing job opportunities.

Social Objectives of the Afforestation Initiative:

The Egyptian state aims at doubling the per capita share of green spaces, as well as absorbing pollutants and fumes, which will positively reflect on the public health of citizens, not to mention the environmental returns represented mainly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

Types of Planted Trees:

The Ministry of Environment has identified the types of trees that are planted in the 100 Million Trees Initiative, starting with being crops of economic return, whether fruitful trees such as olive, woody or other kinds of trees, in addition to determining the criteria for the types and sizes of trees that will be planted, as well as knowing the extent of their need for water, ease of irrigation and their ability to absorb pollutants from the air.

Participants in the Afforestation Initiative

The roles of institutions and ministries were identified in the initiative, in addition to the civil society organizations and the private sector.

The places that will be planted by the Ministry of Environment:

Within this Initiative, the Ministry of Environment will plant one million trees annually, through a number of programs, including the presidential initiative “Decent Life”, in addition to the programs of the afforestation of the most polluted areas, that of the afforestation of the main roads, and the establishment of plant nurseries in the governorates, as well as the program of planting trees in schools, universities, institutes, neighbourhoods, local units, youth centres and others.

Hangamelha (We will beautify it) Foundation for Sustainable Development will participate in planting 54,000 trees in 27 governorates and 18,000 trees in Sharkia Governorate, including olive, lemon, pomegranate and mango trees.

The Foundation will also participate in planting 2000 diverse types of trees in all governorates in cooperation with Decent Life Initiative, including olive, lemon, pomegranate, mango, in addition to the moringa trees; being among the most important crops that deserve attention as they do not consume lots of water.
