The Ministry of Youth and Sports announced the hosting of the African Basketball Championship, the world's largest futsal event, for the second year, under the auspices of the US National Basketball Association (NBA).

The tournament will be held from 26 April to 5 May at Dr. Hassan Moustafa Hall in Sixth of October City.

12 African teams will participate in the tournament, divided into two groups, and Egypt will be represented by Al-Ahly Club.

The 12 BAL teams are divided into two groups – the Sahara Conference group and the Nile Conference group.  Each group includes 6 teams, of which 4 teams advance to the quarter-finals. 

The top four teams from each conference group will qualify for the BAL Playoffs, which will feature a single-elimination tournament and Finals at BK Arena in Rwanda from May 21-27.

The meetings of the Sahara Conference games will take place at the Dakar Arena in Senegal, from March 11-21, 2023.

The meetings of the Nile Conference games will take place at Hassan Moustafa Indoor Sports Complex in Cairo, Egypt, from April 26 to May 6, 2023.

Al Ahly (Egypt) came at the head of the six teams of the Nile Conference Group, namely: Cape Town Tigers (South Africa), City Oilers (Uganda), Club Atlético Petróleos de Luanda (Petro de Luanda; Angola), Clube Ferroviário da Beira (CFV – Beira; Mozambique) and Seydou Legacy Athlétique Club (S.L.A.C; Guinea).

Al Ahly Sporting Club (Egypt), the host team, will face Clube Ferroviário da Beira (Mozambique) in the opener.
