The Signing Ceremony of the New Strategic Partnership Framework between Egypt and the UN on sustainable development cooperation for the period 2023-2027

Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly participated, on Tuesday evening 9 May 2023, in the activities of signing ceremony of the new Strategic Partnership Framework between Egypt and the UN on sustainable development cooperation for the period 2023-2027.

The event witnessed the participation of Ms. Elena Panova, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt, and the Ministers of International Cooperation, Planning, economic development, environment, petroleum, mineral wealth, civil aviation, manpower, immigration and affairs of Egyptians abroad, water resources and irrigation, supply and internal trade, youth and sports, transport, local development, trade and industry, culture, environment, tourism and antiquities, public business sector, as well as health and population. This is in addition to representatives of UN agencies and programs affiliated with the United Nations, members of the House of Representatives and Senate, the private sector, international institutions and civil society.

The framework of partnership outlines development projects carried out in Egypt in collaboration with the UN agencies, in accordance with the priorities of the Egyptian government as well the national plan for sustainable development “Egypt’s Vision 2030”, which is in line with the UN sustainable development goals 2030.

The UN Framework for Sustainable Development Cooperation focuses on realizing human rights, promoting gender equality, empowering women, girls and youth, deepening resilience to climate change, disasters and epidemics and ensuring sustainability, as well as supporting transparent accountability and good governance.

The partnership agreement was signed by International Cooperation Minister Rania El-Mashaat and the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova, in their capacities as co-head of the facilitation committee on the strategic framework of partnership between Egypt and the UN toward sustainable development.

Activities

At the beginning of the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and the attendees watched a documentary on the strategic partnership framework between Egypt and the UN on sustainable development cooperation in the fields of population, education, health and sustainable development.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli delivered a speech, welcoming all attendees, and saluting the various parties related to development work and international cooperation, which seek as serious and active partners to present Egypt as a pioneering development model that puts the population of this great country – with all its spectrum, including immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers - at the center of attention in all its development programs and projects.

In his speech, Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli commended cooperation between Egypt and the UN to achieve sustainable development.

He said that Egypt has made significant progress in addressing development challenges, in partnership with the UN, noting that the State succeeded in reducing poverty, supporting social protection programs to provide decent life for citizens and countering terrorism, illegal migration and human trafficking, in addition to its contribution to enhancing international peace and security.

He stated that Egypt introduced economic reforms and shored up its social protection measures, through expanding the "Takaful and Karama" cash transfer program, increasing wages and pensions and subsidizing basic goods and services.

The prime minister added Egypt pays great attention to attaining development in Africa, noting that African countries need further international support to enhance the investment in people and modernize their basic infrastructure.

He said Egypt will seek in the coming period to invest in human capital and boost productivity and innovation, stressing the need for a more dynamic private sector to create job opportunities, increase exports, diversify the sources of national income and back intellectual property rights.

For her part, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation and co-chair of the facilitation committee on the strategic framework of partnership between Egypt and the UN toward sustainable development said that the signing of the new partnership framework 2023 -2027, inaugurates a new strategic phase in the relations of joint cooperation with one of the largest and most prestigious international organizations, the United Nations, expressing thanks and appreciation to His Excellency the Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouli for his presence and sponsorship of this event, which represents the second celebration during the same week within the framework of Launching development cooperation strategies.

The Minister of International Cooperation stated that by signing this new partnership framework 2023 -2027, Egypt have completed preparing and formulating new development cooperation strategies with all multilateral development partners, as well as establishing an integrated framework of international cooperation and development financing for the next five years, in a way that meets national goals and priorities, in addition to the needs of the Egyptian citizen.

The activities concluded with the announcement of launching the New Strategic Partnership Framework between Egypt and the UN on sustainable development cooperation for the period 2023-2027, where Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouli witnessed the signing ceremony.

This framework included five sets of results according to each of the following axes: comprehensive economic development, social justice, sustainability of environmental and natural resources, good governance, and the empowerment of women and girls.
