Egypt's African identity

By Ambassador/ Salah el-Din Abdul Sadeq
Chairman of the State Information Service

Egypt's affiliation to Africa exceeds the traditional historic and geographic dimensions. It has been a main component of the Egyptian "Identity" throughout the ages as well as a pivotal element in forming the cultural features of the Egyptian identity. This identity is composed of a mixture of Arabic language, Islamic and Coptic religions, and Mediterranean and Nile African dimensions.

Up hoisting Egypt's African identity and enhancing the affiliation to African states is clearly highlighted by the provisions and articles of the new Egyptian Constitution that has been approved by the Egyptian people sincethe beginning of this year (98.1% of the voters, 19 million and 985 thousands and 389 voters). This has been highlighted in the very first sentence of its preamble "Egypt is the gift of the Nile for Egyptians and the gift of Egyptians to humanity. With its unique location and history, Egypt is the Arab heart of the world. It is the meeting point of world civilizations and cultures and the crossroads of its maritime transportation and communications.

It is the head of Africa on the Mediterranean and the estuary of its great river: the Nile" .

These historic values and principles have been confirmed by Article 1 of this constitution that stipulated "The Egyptian people are part of the Arab nation seeking to enhance its integration and unity. Egypt is part of the Islamic world, belongs to the African continent, cherishes its Asian dimension, and contributes to building human civilization.

Thinking deeply about such constitutional provisions, one can find out that they come within the framework of a more general and a more comprehensive context concerning Egypt's relations and bonds with respect to Africa which can be included in what is called "The Unity of Civilization"
