Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1952 with a non resident Ambassador. The Chief of Mission was Ambassador Mahmoud Hammad, residing in Buenos Aires.
The embassy in Montevideo was opened in October 1958, and the first Ambassador to Uruguay Dr. Abd El-Meguid Ramadan presented credential on October 22, 1958, and to Paraguay on July 7, 1959.
Uruguay contributes to the Multinational Force and Observers located in the Sinai Peninsula with a battalion of 53 personnel.
