In the first move to activate the recent constitutional amendments, the procedures for amending some articles of Law No. 73 for 1956 regarding the exercise of political rights have been initiated.
The new amendments are indeed an addition to the constitutional and legislative reform and a further step to enhance democratic practice and to eliminate weakness earlier experienced in public elections.
This thirteenth amendment of the law regulating Political Rights aims to ensure good management, organization, and integrity of elections. The amendment will pass through the following:
• Enlarged debates among parties on the proposed amendments
• Approval on April 26,2007 of the amended law by Council of Ministers
• Approval in principle of Shura Council of the amendments on May 3, 2007
• Approval of People’s Assembly on May 8, 2007
