The Egyptian Cultural Center in Freetown was opened in 1964 but was closed in the early nineties due to the outbreak of civil war in Sierra Leone. Closing of the Egyptian embassy in Freetown was frequent during the times of civil war and it was re-opened in April 1999, and has not been closed since.
Sierra Leone opened its embassy in Cairo in 1968, but was closed in 1983 due to the economic conditions in Sierra Leone. An honorary consul to Sierra Leone was appointed in Cairo since January 2004 , and the Ambassador of Sierra Leone currently in Riyadh is accredited as a non-resident Ambassador in Egypt.
