Although Egypt had numerous reservations on the division of Sudan, it has accepted the results of the referendum which brought into being the State of South Sudan and has since sought to remove all obstacles hampering its progress.

Cairo officially recognized South Sudan on July 9, 2011. An Egyptian delegation attended the celebrations marking the country's independence.
